They relate well to teenagers in the book and also do out of their way to stand up for them. What surprised me is that most of the adults were not only slightly serious, but also very quirky. It seemed like their quirkiness - whether is was their dress, their teaching style, or their own interests - appealed greatly to the youthful characters. This applies in reality too.
